Privacy Policy

We never collect your note content.

Not a single word, character, or byte of any note, paste, or clipboard content ever leaves your Mac. Period. No exceptions. We have no way to read what you put in NotchNotes, and we never will.

The short version

NotchNotes is built with privacy as a core principle. Your notes never leave your Mac. There are no user accounts, no cloud sync, and no third-party analytics that track your content.

Data collection

NotchNotes collects minimal, anonymous telemetry to help us understand how the app is used and to fix bugs. This includes:

App launch and quit events
Feature usage signals (e.g. which source is active, whether auto-scroll is enabled)
macOS version and hardware type (Apple Silicon vs. Intel)
Crash reports

This telemetry is sent through TelemetryDeck, a privacy-first analytics service based in the EU. TelemetryDeck does not collect IP addresses, device identifiers, or any information that could identify you personally.

Absolutely no note content is ever collected. Telemetry never includes the content of your notes, clipboard data, Obsidian vault data, or any text you display in the app. Not in full, not in part, not in summary, not even hashed.

Local data storage

All data NotchNotes works with stays on your computer:

Clipboard content is read from the system pasteboard and held in memory only while displayed. It is not written to disk or sent anywhere.
Obsidian notes are read from your vault via the companion plugin over a local WebSocket connection. Note content is held in memory and never transmitted off-device.
Settings and preferences are stored in the standard macOS UserDefaults on your machine.

Obsidian plugin

The NotchNotes Obsidian plugin communicates exclusively over a local WebSocket connection (localhost). It sends the active note's content directly to the NotchNotes app on the same machine. No data passes through any external server.

Network requests

NotchNotes makes outbound network requests only for:

Anonymous telemetry events (via TelemetryDeck)
Checking for app updates (via GitHub Releases)

Both of these can be disabled.

Third-party services

The only third-party service used is TelemetryDeck for anonymous usage analytics. TelemetryDeck is GDPR-compliant and does not track individual users.

Children's privacy

NotchNotes does not knowingly collect any data from children under the age of 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.
